I do remember … ,
I was lying in bed late the other night trying to go to sleep.
When I heard the haunting sound of a far away train whistle.
I lay there for a minute or two, listening, to the whistle blew as it crossed a couple of crossings.
I remember … the train whistles blowing late at night when I was young.
I remember … It would be after midnight as I lay in bed with a headphone on one ear, plugged into my World War II short-wave radio, listening to one of two radio stations.
I’d either have the 50,000-watt station, KWKH 1130 on the AM dial out of Shreveport, LA. KWKH was one of the first radio stations to broadcast Elvis Presley on the old “Louisiana Hayride” radio show.
Or, I would be listening to the “Outlaw-Borderblaster” XERF 1570 AM coming from DEL REO, TX. Well, it’s really, Del Rio, TX / Villa Acuna, MX. The offices were in Del Rio and the radio tower was in Villa Acuna. A 50,000 wt station like KWKH could up it wattage in Mexico to 500,000 watts. With 250,000 or 500,000 watts, XERF could be heard in 36 States and mid-central Canada.
XERF was where Wolfman Jack got his start.
I remember … one night I was listening to, A cowboy song, sung by Hank Williams, “(I heard that) Lonesome whistle”, I heard one of the many trains that passed through town blow it’s whistle.
So, The train whistle’s blowing the other night brought back memories of my youth, listening to “outlaw” radio from DEL RIO, TX, or maybe listening to that new guy on the “Louisiana Hayride”.
I do remember … good memories.
